N54 PTE 6870 1.0 A/R Build

Objective of this is to act as a resource for those considering/in the process of upgrading. There are plenty others with great info, but there are always bits you find elsewhere. Happy to answer any questions.

So in the next few weeks I’ll have the car running on 93. I’ve had parts sitting around for a while just haven’t gotten around to taking care of it. Likewise I’ll be updating this thread slowly. I went with the PTE 6870 1.0 A/R DocRace twin scroll kit. John has been a refreshing addition to the platform. My experience so far has been excellent across all categories. Coming from an FBO E85 car there were a few bits that needed to be changed simultaneously. I was still on the OEM clutch/flywheel and plastic upper CP/DVs so I picked up the MFactory Twin Disc and installed a China CP and an authentic HKS SSQV. My experience with MFactory has been great so far shipping was unbelievably fast considering it came from Taiwan (3-4 day turnaround iirc).

03/28/16 - DocRace kit ordered

04/08/16 - PTE 6870 arrived from Precision - Kit sent to Performance Coatings in WA for ceramic coating

04/19/16 - MFactory twin disc ordered

04/28/16 - DocRace kit arrived

04/25/16 - MFactory twin disc arrived

05/18/16 - MFactory twin disc installed

I spoke to MFactory about shim adjustments and in my case using the max number of shims is desired you will need to adjust to your preference.

No prep is required, Simply take the assembly apart and wipe off the oil with some brake kleen

As with any clutch install you are going to need new exhaust gaskets, transmission bolts, flywheel bolts, TOB (I just bought a new fork with at TOB on it), I also suggest installing a new giubo, rear main seal, a non-plastic pivot pin, and if you want to swap them the transmission mounts.. all of these are easily accessible. These parts will "add up" to about $3-400, but you shouldn't incur any extra labor and if you are doing it yourself it is a no brainer.

The MFactory twin disc is probably not for most.. I like it.. It is stiff and there is no slip, but my engagement point is near the top so I don't really care..

5/19/16 - Crank pulley bolt came loose during test drive and all exhaust valves bent, exhaust cam damaged, head considered done

5/23/16 - LKQ motor ordered

5/28/16 - LKQ motor arrived

07/12/16 - First start up with new motor and Doc kit installed

November 2016 - Dyno'd 550whp/503wtq at 20psi on a DJ in hot/humid weather

June 2017 - Added a PI manifold/PI injectors/controller and LSD

June 2017 - Dyno'd 702whp/576wtq @28psi in humid 94 degree weather on a without dialing it in

2019 - Switched to 15" rear wheel setup and mfactory axles

2021- Added O2 heat sinks as I the OEM sensors fry quickly.

Notes/Tips

Assuming you got a kit (not just a hot parts kit) you will need an upgraded FMIC, a Walbro 450 at a bare minimum for lower power levels, brackets for coolant and power steering relocation, an appropriate clutch/flywheel,

Coolant/PS res brackets can made at home with some Home Depot brackets or you can reach out to MMP or VM for a set of theirs.

If you order a DocRace kit you will need to order the following: 3.5 TMAP adapter, mac solenoid

Other parts to strongly consider are LSD, driveshaft, and axles

If you order a kit make sure you do a parts check before installing. Very common for bits to be missing and it is understandable so plan accordingly.
